Marathon Digital has stated that it has purchased more Bitcoin mining equipment from Bitmain.
The United States-based Bitcoin (BTC) mining giant has finalized a purchase agreement for 30,000 Antminer S19j Pro at a reported cost of $120.7 million, according to a press statement published on Monday.
Marathon’s Bitcoin mining inventory has grown once more, with Bitmain estimating that the additional rigs will be delivered by June 2023.
Marathon’s overall Bitcoin miner count will exceed 133,000 with the 30,000 rigs in tow, providing an estimated hash rate of 13.3 exahashes per second (EH/s).
To put the number in context, according to BTC.com, the top three BTC mining pools have speeds ranging from 13.16 EH/s to 18.67 EH/s.
Marathon will effectively control over 12% of the current Bitcoin mining hash rate at 13.3 EH/s every second.
With the announcement, Marathon CEO Fred Thiel referred to the advantages of having a dominating position in the worldwide hash rate distribution, saying:
“Increasing our share of the overall network’s hash rate improves our chances of earning bitcoin, and given the present mining environment’s particularly advantageous circumstances, we think now is a good moment to add additional miners to our operations.”

The worldwide hash rate distribution has been upended by China’s Bitcoin mining crackdown, with North American players likely to control a greater share of the sector. Even before Beijing’s anti-crypto measures, mining behemoths in the United States and Canada increased their capacity by purchasing fresh inventory from Bitmain and MicroBT, the two largest Bitcoin manufacturers.
The movement of hash rates from East to West may also help to reduce the carbon impact of Bitcoin mining. Marathon is among a growing list of U.S. miners reportedly committed to “green mining.”
Meanwhile, Chinese miners are allegedly setting up business in Kazakhstan, resulting in an instant rise in the hash rate of Bitcoin mining.
